the powder rooms

The Powder Rooms project started in January 2005 when Richmond Council advertised for sale three of the former public conveniences in the Borough.

Wisam Kamleh, also Director at architecture:wk, architects practicing in Richmond Borough for nearly ten years, bid for two of the buildings;  the Cambridge Gardens convenience in Richmond along the Riverside, and the Broad Street Conveniences in Teddington, Richmond upon Thames.

The bids to Richmond Council were to present ideas for the use of the properties as well as making a price offering.

The idea for an office and art gallery was based on the ambition Sam Kamleh had for working in an environment surrounded by art and beautiful furniture and products.  The initial idea was to create a single large space as office incorporating art gallery with borrowed furniture that may also attract the attention of clients of the architectural practice.

The powder rooms now house the offices of architecture:wk to Broad Street, another lower ground office to Church Lane, and the architects gallery housing some of the best artwork in Teddington!
